In the 1980s, local artist Merrill Coffin took on a project that would become a treasured piece of his legacy—transforming his old horse barn into a gallery. What had once been a working barn was lovingly renovated into a welcoming space for art and community.

The barn itself had all the charm of a classic country structure, painted a deep red with crisp white trim. To add character, Merrill and his wife, Lois, decorated the space with antique fishing equipment they had collected on their travels through New England. These pieces gave the gallery a sense of history, tying together Merrill’s artistic vision with the couple’s love of collecting.
On Sunday, June 14, the gallery officially opened its doors to the public as The Coffin House Gallery of Fine Paintings. Visitors were invited inside to view Merrill’s work in a setting that reflected not just his art, but his life and passions.
The opening of the gallery was more than an event—it was a celebration of creativity, hard work, and the blending of art with everyday living. What began as a barn for horses became a home for art, memory, and inspiration.
